Creative Ways to Lose Weight in 2009 |
Once again it is that time of the year where we resolve to achieve new goals and give up bad habits. For most of us, losing weight is a top priority in 2009 so I thought I would give you some helpful tips:
Combine your resolutions so that you are more likely to stay committed to your goals.
For instance you can lose weight by resolving to become a better person. Everyday there are opportunities to help someone, and at the same time you can help yourself reach your weight loss goal. • Shovel your neighbor’s driveway. This will burn some additional calories. • Tidy up the office or break room. • Become a big brother or mentor and do activities with a needy child. • Sign up for walks for charity. Have a sign up sheet at work and let your friends sponsor you. This is a great way to do a great deed and get fit at the same time without spending any money.
You can lose more weight if you resolve to spend more time with your family. • Select healthy activities such as bowling. Visit a new park every month and walk the trails. • Sit down at the dinner table. Without the distractions of the TV, you will eat smaller portions. • Plan vacations that encourage you to move. Adventures while camping, hiking, or white water rafting allow you to bond and stay fit. |

In a recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found there was an association between abdominal fat and early mortality. More than half a million men and women in Europe were enrolled and measured. There have been many studies in the past that showed excess weight can lead to death. This new study demonstrates that the spare tire around your belly also can also lead to premature death. In the past, health care professionals would measure your waist to determine your risk of disease. Now this study shows that a waist size greater than 102cm (40") in men and 88 cm (35") in women is not only associated with disease, but early death. In fact the waist circumference and waist to hip ratio were found to be a better predictor of disease risk than BMI (the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters). In this study, people with a normal weight and a large abdomen still had a higher risk of death.

The holiday season is here and it is time to whip out those credit cards. Whether you intend to spend a little or a lot, just make sure you spend wisely. Most of us make a list of things we need to buy our parents or children. Take a holistic approach to shopping. Try to determine what gifts will be good for the entire family. Gifts for Better Health Look for products that exude health. Soy candles, organic cold pressed olive oil and work out equipment. To keep expenses low, you can buy small gifts such as aloe plants or herb bushes such as small rosemary bushes or basil plants. You can buy herbal teas or organic spices for the holidays and put them in a box and add a ribbon. Gifts that Display Your Thoughtfulness Think of the needs of your family. Does someone complain of a certain condition all the time? Do they complain about pain, brain fog, migraines, insomnia or stress? Buy them a gift that will help them have a better 2009. Search the net. Google “gifts for people with__________.” See what you can come up with. You can always go to your local bookstore to buy books on personal improvement. Other thoughts: Cooking classes, gym memberships, smoking cessation programs, swimming lessons.

Overlooked Causes of Obesity |
|
Conventional wisdom says Americans have gotten fat because they eat too much and exercise too little, but a new study in The International Journal of Obesity lists other possible causes of weight gain. The researchers reviewed more than 100 obesity studies and concluded that 10 other factors have contributed to the nations collective weight gain. The researchers from The International Journal of Obesity write that they found “supportive (although not conclusive)” evidence for each of the factors on their list that is “as compelling as the evidence for more commonly discussed putative explanations.” (Meaning that these causes seem to be as valid as our most common causes of obesity. I believe that each individual is effected by a variety of issues that ultimately lead them to weight gain. Take a look at the list and see if any of these factors may contribute to your weight issues. I would like your thoughts on the topic, and some other lesser known things you believe may cause obesity. We will dovetail off this list to create our own.)
1 – Birds of a feather: Humans with similar body types tend to mate, thus passing along genes that contribute to obesity (The same can often be said for smokers and drinkers, as they tend to hang together due to common practices.). 2 – Pollution: Environmental toxins can disrupt the normal activity of hormones that regulate fat metabolism, causing side effects that may lead to metabolic changes and weight gain. |

I don't mean to be an alarmist but Daylight Savings Time is right around the corner. Many of you are probably thinking "That is the last thing on my mind." It does seem so far away. I must admit, I am a little obsessed with the tradition of setting the clocks back in the Fall. Let's face it, when you work nightshifts in the Emergency Room, the time shift means an extra hour of work instead of an extra hour of leisure time; but unlike me, the average person has a choice, and can decide how he or she will spend that free hour! Unfortunately often times the day sneaks up on people and they end up wasting that precious hour on something unimportant such as watching TV.
